In November of this year, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan.
In this regard, relevant measures are being organized by the state institutions of the republic. On March 14, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Health with representatives of a number of government agencies of Azerbaijan and WHO health and climate experts on the topic of health care at COP-29.
The meeting was attended by officials from the World Health Organization (WHO), who are members of the COP-29 negotiating group - Maria Neira, Director of the Department of Public Health, Environment, and Social Determinants of Health at the World Health Organization (WHO), Robb Butler, Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Environment, and Health of the WHO European Regional Office, and other WHO experts, as well as representatives from the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ministries of Health, Foreign Affairs, Ecology and Natural Resources.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Health Nadir Zeynalov emphasized the priority of global health within the COP framework. According to him, global health plays a crucial role in addressing the impacts of climate change on public health and improving global health security.
Members of the COP-29 negotiating group noted the nature and significance of the event to be held in Azerbaijan in November for our country and the region. According to them, the decision to hold COP29 in Azerbaijan in 2024, with the unanimous agreement of all countries, is another indicator of international trust in our country.
